Data Validation

Data validation is the process of checking the data for inconsistencies. For example, does the last name field contain a value or is it blank? More comprehensive validation includes comparison of city and state codes to the zip code. The U.S. Postal Service sells a database containing zip codes and their associated cities and states. It is common to have multiple cities in one zip code. Validating the data with the U.S. Postal Service zip code data would illuminate any record that could potentially have a miss-spelled city name.
